Al-Maqasid Academy field trip to
The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Al-Maqasid Academy recently took a field trip to The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met) in New York City, one of the world's largest and most prestigious art museums. The Met's vast collection spans over 5,000 years of art from various cultures and regions, offering a unique window into human history and creativity.

Our students, teachers, and chaperones enjoyed an enriching and educational experience, exploring the museum's diverse exhibits and gaining a deeper appreciation for the arts.

Journeying Back to the Quran:
Living Quran in the Prophetic Light

On Saturday, Al-Maqasid held a one-day seminar titled "Journeying Back to the Quran: Living Quran in the Prophetic Light" with Dr. Muzaffer Iqbal.

Guests joined for an exploration of what it was like to receive the Qurʾān from the Prophet’s ﷺ blessed tongue. They discovered how this Prophetic Light transformed and purified those Divinely chosen to be his Companions. The attendees learned how, in a time of great tribulations, they could connect to this Light, transcending darkness to illuminate their hearts.

The seminar offered a unique path to the Qurʾān, bringing participants to the heart of the Prophetic era when the Qurʾān was revealed to the blessed heart of the unlettered Prophet ﷺ.

May Allah (SWT) bless all those who attended and grant them the ability to implement the teachings they have learned. May He reward Dr. Muzaffer Iqbal abundantly for his efforts and dedication. Ameen.

ON DEVOTIONAL POETRY

We are excited to announce our upcoming Weekend Retreat, which will be held on June 7-9 titled On Devotional Poetry, a study of Book 18 of Imam al- Ghazali’s masterpiece Ihya’ ‘Ulum al-Din (Revival of the Religious Sciences).

While there are differing scholarly opinions with respect to music and singing, Imam al-Ghazali argues in Book 18 that there is both textual evidence and proper analogy that indicate their permissibility under certain occasions and conditions. For example, Imam al-Ghazali mentions the singing that occurred upon the arrival of the Messenger to Madinah and on another occasion, he ﷺ allowed Sayyida Aisha, Radiallahu Anha, to listen to servants beating drums during Eid. Additionally, the messenger ﷺ said with respect to one of his ﷺ he Messenger companions, “[he] has been gifted with a sweet melodious voice out of the voices of the family of Dawud.”

In Imam al-Ghazali’s On Devotional Poetry, he discusses the differing scholarly opinions on music and singing, the permissibility of listening to pleasant sounds, types of pleasant sounds including poetry, five contingencies which make music and singing impermissible, and rebuttals to arguments prohibiting music and singing.

We welcome you to join us in exploring this often misunderstood but, in these times, highly relevant issue in what we pray will be a weekend filled with abundant blessings as we acquire knowledge and spend time in devotion together.

This weekly Majlis includes a recitation of the prophetic biography in poetry form followed by a counsel intended to connect the listener to the Prophet ﷺ and his teachings. The more we know about his life, character, and way, the more we will come to love and follow the one beloved to Allah.

Preserving Our Hearts

Yahya rhodus

"There is nothing we can do for creation if our hearts are not in the right places."

It’s important that we be aware of what transpires around us. It is important that we be aware of the trends and currents of our time, as well as modern and current events. However, we cannot let ourselves get sucked into the black hole of these matters, as it is extremely unhealthy for us.

The Company We Keep

Amjad Tarsin

“The foundation of instilling good character in a child is to protect them from the company of evil people.”

Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “A man is upon the religion of his best friend, so let one of you look at whom he befriends.” (Sunan al-Tirmidhī)

The Connection of Hearts

Muhammed Suliman

“We have knowledge that is rooted in the prophetic household, tracing back to the Prophet ﷺ."

Recognizing Blessings

kHALIL mOORE

“Verily, there are people right now who are in dire need of the light and beauty that we are experiencing, drinking from, and tasting.”

The weekly Jumu'a, or Friday, Congregational prayer is live streamed from Al-Maqasid from 12:15pm-1:10pm.

How to Speak Privately - Yahya rhodus

“To the extent that we align our private conversations to what Allah Ta’ala is saying here is to the degree that you and I will actively be doers of good and that we will be encouraging good in society.”

Allah Ta’ala warns us in the Quran to be careful when engaged in private conversations: “There is no good in most of their secret talks… ,” [4:114] and then He mentions the three exceptions to this rule: encouraging charity, kindness, and reconciliation between people.

In this khutba, Yahya Rhodus discusses these three exceptions and their benefits, including how they contribute to the spiritual and religious maturity of a community.

Beware of envy, for it devours good deeds just as fire devours wood or grass.
— Sunan Abī Dāwūd

Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said,

“A man is upon the religion of his best friend, so let one of you look at whom he befriends.”
