FEATURED

“Indeed, Allah made you victorious at Badr when you were outnumbered. So be mindful of Allah, so that you may be grateful. ˹Remember, O Prophet,˺ when you said to the believers, ‘Is it not enough that your Lord will send down a reinforcement of three thousand angels for your aid?...Allah ordained this only as good news for you and reassurance for your hearts. And victory comes only from Allah—the Almighty, All-Wise.” [Quran 3:123-124, 126]

Commemorating events from the life of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gives life to the our hearts, strengthens our faith, and inspires within us love, reverence, and dedication.

Tafsir Sura al-Qasas

Sura al-Qasas (The Whole Story), the 28th Sura of the Quran, focuses primarily on the story of Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) and the Pharaoh, as well as the story of Qārūn. These Quranic narratives teach us, among other things, the dangers of worldly power and attachment to wealth. Through these stories, Sura al-Qasas also elucidates the absolute supremacy of Allah's will and authority.

This series attempts to reflect on some of the wisdoms found within the endless ocean of Quranic meaning. We ask Allah ﷻ to make the Quran a means for strengthening our faith, a guide for us through tribulations, and a key to opening for us the greatest treasuries of divine knowledge.

We inspired the mother of Moses: “Nurse him, but when you fear for him, put him then into the river, and do not fear or grieve. We will certainly return him to you, and make him one of the messengers.”

And ˹it so happened that˺ Pharaoh’s people picked him up, only to become their enemy and source of grief. Surely Pharaoh, Hamān, and their soldiers were sinful. Pharaoh’s wife said ˹to him˺, “˹This baby is˺ a source of joy for me and you. Do not kill him. Perhaps he may be useful to us or we may adopt him as a son.” They were unaware ˹of what was to come˺. And the heart of Moses’ mother ached so much that she almost gave away his identity, had We not reassured her heart in order for her to have faith ˹in Allah’s promise˺.

And she said to his sister, “Keep track of him!” So she watched him from a distance, while they were unaware. And We had caused him to refuse all wet-nurses at first, so his sister suggested, “Shall I direct you to a family who will bring him up for you and take good care of him?” This is how We returned him to his mother so that her heart would be put at ease, and not grieve, and that she would know that Allah’s promise is ˹always˺ true. But most people do not know.

[Quran 28:7-13]

And when he reached full strength and maturity, We gave him wisdom and knowledge. This is how We reward the good-doers. ˹One day˺ he entered the city unnoticed by its people. There he found two men fighting: one of his own people, and the other of his enemies. The man from his people called to him for help against his foe. So Moses punched him, causing his death. Moses cried, “This is from Satan’s handiwork. He is certainly a sworn, misleading enemy.” He pleaded, “My Lord! I have definitely wronged my soul, so forgive me.” So He forgave him, ˹for˺ He is indeed the All-Forgiving, Most Merciful. Moses pledged, “My Lord! For all Your favors upon me, I will never side with the wicked.”

[Quran 28:14-17]

Why start a Fatwa Department in America?

One of the religious obligations upon every community is producing scholars in the locality who can provide answers to any religious questions the Muslims may have. Such an answer, referred to as a fatwa, is the clarification of the legal opinion held by Muslim scholars to a specific question.

In an effort to fulfill this community obligation, Al-Maqasid will now be accepting questions and clarifying their rulings in Islam by relaying the opinions of the scholars or jurists. Questions can range from the validity of acts of worship to the permissibility of financial transactions, marriage and divorce issues, the permissibility of eating, drinking, or wearing specific things, and more.

We ask Allah, the Most High, for tawfiq in fulfilling this important duty and serving the needs of the Muslim community with excellence.

JUMU’A KHUTBA

The weekly Jumu'a, or Friday, Congregational prayer is live streamed from Al-Maqasid from 12:15pm-1:10pm.

 The ‘Madrasa’ of Ramadan

“The Quran is calling us to love Allah, subhanahu wa ta’ala. The Quran is calling us to seek higher levels of nearness to Him.”

Citing verses of the Quran and several Hadith, Amjad Tarsin explains why Ramadan is a unique opportunity to become closer to Allah, subhanahu wa ta’ala, and that Allah, in His immense Mercy and Generosity, is inviting us during this most blessed month to become beloved to Him. Because of this, this month has been referred to as ‘The Madrasa of Ramadan’ or ‘The School of Ramadan.’

Now that nearly a quarter of the month has passed, Amjad also encourages us to ask ourselves: “How much taqwa have I acquired in this month? How much change has really taken place at the level of the heart?”
