AL-MAQASID WEEKLY | FEBRUARY 12, 2024

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was asked, "How can salvation be achieved?" He ﷺ replied, "Control your tongue, keep to your house, and weep over your sins." Another time, the Prophet was asked: "O Messenger of Allah! Which of the people is best?" The Prophet ﷺ replied: "One who strives with himself and his wealth in the cause of Allah." The questioner then asked: "Then who, O Messenger of Allah?" He ﷺ said: "Then a believer [isolating himself] in one of the mountain passes, who fears Allah and spares the people his evil." On the other hand, in the Quran both Prophet Ibrahim and Prophet Musa (peace be upon them) mention secluding themselves from others to protect their faith (see Quran 19:48 and 44:21).

In Imam al-Ghazali’s book On Spiritual Retreat, he discusses the arguments for keeping company and those for solitude, the benefits of spiritual retreat, the benefits of keeping company, and other factors that shed light on this debate and should be considered when deciding what to do.

“Glory be to the One Who took His servant by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque whose surroundings We have blessed, so that We may show him some of Our signs.” [Quran 17:1]

Of the most significant events that occurred in the life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was the Isra’ wa’l Mi‘raj (the Night Journey and Heavenly Ascent). On this night, the Prophet’s heart ﷺ was washed and he traveled to Jerusalem where he led all the Prophets and Messengers in prayer. He then ascended the seven heavens, arrived at the Furthest Lote Tree, and was entered into the Divine Presence where Allah the Exalted honored him and granted his Umma the five daily prayers.

This weekly Majlis includes a recitation of the prophetic biography in poetry form followed by a counsel intended to connect the listener to the Prophet ﷺ and his teachings. The more we know about his life, character, and way, the more we will come to love and follow the one beloved to Allah.
