The Faculty of Al-Maqasid is diligently preparing for the upcoming school year. InshaAllah, this year will be filled with knowledge, growth, and spiritual enrichment. We pray that Allah grants us wisdom, understanding, and the ability to apply our learnings in ways that benefit our Umma and humanity at large. May our intentions be pure, our efforts be sincere, and our achievements be a means of drawing closer to Him.
Upcoming programs
Assalamu ‘alaykum,
Please join Al-Maqasid as we commemorate the blessed Day of ‘Ashūrā, the 10th of Muharram. Al-Maqasid will be observing ‘Ashūrā on Tuesday, July 16th at 7:30 PM followed by a community potluck.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “For fasting the Day of ‘Ashūrā, I anticipate that Allah will expiate the previous year’s sins.” [Muslim]
Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be well pleased with him) also narrates, “When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fasted the Day of ‘Ashūrā and called for others to fast that day, someone said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, this is a day that is revered by the Jews and Christians.’ He replied, ‘In the next year, in shā’ Allah, we will also fast on the ninth day.’” [Muslim] Therefore, it is recommended to fast the 9th and 10th of Muharram.
It is also highly recommended to give life to the eve of ‘Ashūrā in order to receive divine assistance and the outpouring of Allah’s beneficence. This can be done through reciting the Quran and reciting Prophetic supplications and invocations.
In addition to fasting the Day of ‘Ashūrā, the Prophet ﷺ also recommended that one should be generous in spending on one’s family and also give them one’s time and attention.
We ask Allah ﷻ to grant us the best of this Day of ‘Ashūrā and to make it a day of blessings, relief, and elevation for the entire Umma.

LOVING THE BELOVED ﷺ
This weekly Majlis includes a recitation of the prophetic biography in poetry form followed by a counsel intended to connect the listener to the Prophet ﷺ and his teachings. The more we know about his life, character, and way, the more we will come to love and follow the one beloved to Allah.
The Exemplary Guide: Emulating the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ - Auzair Khilwati
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, "The wise person is the one who calls himself to account, restrains himself from doing evil, and works for what will come after death" (Tirmidhi).
"So whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it" (Qur'an 99:7-8).
Allah, in His mercy, favored the believers with something incredible: He sent to them the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. He sent to them a man who, in every waking state, was a model for the believer to replicate. He sent to them a man whose actions, speech, states, and interactions were all intended for the believer to replicate and follow in their own life.
Allah sent us an example to whom hearts flock, just like how bees go to flowers, how moths go to light. Every single person in humanity recognizes the beauty of the Prophet ﷺ, every single person recognizes his majesty, his incredible nature, his life, character, and accomplishments.
Focusing on the Hereafter - Imam Rasul Suluki
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, "Be in this world as though you were a stranger or a traveler" (Sahih Bukhari)
Our Lord! Grant us the good of this world and the Hereafter, and protect us from the torment of the Fire
The Gatherings of Remembrance - Magan Isa Hoday | Year 2 Seminary Student
The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whenever people gather together to remember Allah, the angels surround them, mercy envelops them, tranquility descends upon them, and Allah mentions them to those in His presence"
(Sahih Muslim).
JUMU’A KHUTBA
The weekly Jumu'a, or Friday, Congregational prayer is live streamed from Al-Maqasid from 12:15pm-1:10pm.
The Sacrifices of the Companions - Omar Amir
“This sacrifice is the reason that we live here now. Is the reason the message of Islam spread everywhere. Without this contribution from the sahaba [Companions], we would never be here today.”
Selecting stories from the Sira and Hadith, Omar Amir reminds us of the tribulations and sacrifices the Companions made so that the deen of Islam could spread all over the world.
Omar also gives the two main reasons how the Companions could make these immense sacrifices and how we can achieve a similar state. He then ends with a question we should all ask ourselves.

Making Spiritual Hijrah
Sayyidi Habib Umar bin Hafiz (may Allah protect him and benefit us by him) calls us to make a spiritual hijrah.
The new year always reminds us of the Hijrah. The physical hijrah is an obligation for those who are unable to freely practise their religion in the place they are in. They must find a place in which they can practise their religion. The angels say to those who fail to make this hijrah: ‘Was Allah’s earth not expansive enough for you to emigrate therein?’ (4:97)
We can also make a spiritual hijrah which is to leave everything which Allah has forbidden, as the Prophet ﷺ told us. This is one of the loftiest types of hijrah. We must check our hearts and bodies at the beginning of this year in order to remove everything which Allah dislikes.
If someone is blessed to leave that which is forbidden he should then seek to leave that which is disliked and dubious. If someone is blessed to leave that which is disliked and dubious he should then seek to leave that which is frivolous and of no benefit. If someone is blessed to leave that which is frivolous he should then seek to leave everything other than Allah.
A person may be leaving that which is forbidden in one aspect of his life, that which is disliked in another aspect, that which is frivolous in another aspect and so on. If he perseveres he will eventually attain the greatest type of hijrah. Sayyiduna Ibrahim said regarding this: I am making hijrah to my Lord (37:99). Allah also said: So flee to Allah (51:50). The Prophet ﷺ said: “The most truthful word spoken by a poet is the saying of Labid: ‘Indeed everything save Allah is false’” (Bukhari and Muslim).
Jihad, like hijrah, has many manifestations but one of the greatest is the one mentioned in the hadith that: “the mujahid is the one who strives against his own desires.”
