Annual Loving the Beloved Celebration ﷺ

We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who attended our Annual Loving the Beloved Celebration ﷺ, as well as those who intended to join us but could not. Your presence and sincere intentions made this gathering a source of abundant blessings and joy.

We ask Allah ﷻ for acceptance and that He makes the love of Him and His Beloved ﷺ firm in our hearts.

Alhamdulillah, we were blessed with the presence of our beloved teacher, Imam Zaid Shakir, who visited Al-Maqasid this past weekend. Imam Zaid delivered a class following Salat al-Fajr and also graced us with his attendance at our Annual Loving the Beloved Celebration.

We express our deep gratitude to Allah for the opportunity to learn from our teachers. May Allah preserve Imam Zaid, increase his benefit to the community, and continue to guide us through his knowledge and example.

UPCOMING PROGRAMS

Hadra Badriyya is a monthly gathering that takes place before Fajr on the last Friday of every Hijri month.* It has been complied by the great scholar Habib Umar Bin Hafiz and consists of various invocations and devotional poems.

* It is also held on the 17th of Ramadan in commemoration of the Battle of Badr

InshaAllah the next session of "Wayfarers to God - A Sisters Series on Suluk" will take place this Saturday, September 28th from 11-1 pm with Sayyida Nejma Davis at Al-Maqasid in the Green Barn.

'Wayfarers to God: A Sister’s Series on Suluk' by Habib Ali Al-Jifri, facilitated by Sayyida Nejma Davis, serves as a comprehensive guide for all those on a journey of Spiritual Wayfaring or Suluk. Rooted in principles of self-reflection and sincere effort, this lecture series gently navigates the intricacies of understanding the nafs (ego) and the detrimental impact it can have. Habib Ali Al-Jifri sheds light on the path to liberating oneself from the nafs, delving into the exploration of base desires, evil inclinations, and diseases of the heart. His approach resonates deeply, permeating the soul and igniting a call to action.

We are excited to announce our upcoming Weekend Retreat, which will be held on October 18-20 titled: On Enjoining Good and Forbidding Evil, a study of Book 19 of Imam al-Ghazali’s masterpiece Ihya’ ‘Ulum al-Din (Revival of the Religious Sciences).

According to Imam Al-Ghazali, enjoining good and forbidding evil is an obligation and crucial to fulfilling the mission of the prophets sent by Allah Ta’ala. If knowledge of it were discarded and its practice neglected, prophethood would be unnecessary, religion would disappear, weakness would reign, and ignorance would prevail. Its centrality to the deen is evident in the Quran, Hadith, statements of the pious predecessors, and in the general consensus of the Umma. For example, Allah Ta’ala tells us:

Let there be a group among you who call ‘others’ to goodness, encourage what is good, and forbid what is evil—it is they who will be successful.
[3:104]

The believers, both men and women, are guardians of one another: They encourage good and forbid evil…[9:71]

You are the best community ever raised for humanity—you encourage good, forbid evil, and believe in God…[3:110]

In Imam al-Ghazali’s On Enjoining Good and Forbidding Evil, he discusses its four pillars, objectional matters in familiar daily activities (such as visiting mosques and marketplaces), the obligation to call to Allah, and how to advise a ruler.

We welcome you to join us in exploring this often neglected and misapplied obligation in what we pray will be a weekend filled with abundant blessings as we acquire knowledge and spend time in devotion together.

Being distant from Allah occurs when you become reassured by the life of this world. And what does it mean to be reassured by the worldly life? When someone is reassured by a certain amount of wealth. Others are reassured by a ministry, reassured by a government, reassured by a tribe, reassured by properties and homes, reassured by cars and the like. All of these things amount to nothing. “It is like a rain that causes plants to grow, to the delight of the planters.” [Quran 57:20] The one who is reassured by these things, relies on them, and is content with them is cut off and loses out on the nobility of felicity.

“Truly, those who do not expect to meet Us, being pleased and secure with this worldly life, and who are heedless of Our signs.” [Quran 10:7]

LOVING THE BELOVED ﷺ

This weekly Majlis includes a recitation of the prophetic biography in poetry form followed by a counsel intended to connect the listener to the Prophet ﷺ and his teachings. The more we know about his life, character, and way, the more we will come to love and follow the one beloved to Allah.

"The confused people that are out there in the world—that’s every single one of us. If it were not for the rays reaching us from the Prophet ﷺ through his inheritors, where would we be?”

Allah says in the Quran: "Indeed, there has come to you from Allah a light and a clear Book." — Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:15)

The Prophet ﷺ also emphasized the importance of his teachings, saying:

“I have left you with two matters which will never lead you astray, as long as you hold to them: the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of his Prophet.” — al-Muwaṭṭa’

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whenever people gather together to remember Allah, the angels surround them, mercy envelops them, tranquility descends upon them, and Allah mentions them to those in His presence" (Sahih Muslim).

Allah, in His infinite wisdom, has revealed the ultimate guidance for mankind — the Quran.

ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَنزَلَ عَلَىٰ عَبْدِهِ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَلَمْ يَجْعَل لَّهُۥ عِوَجَاۜ 

All praise is for Allah Who has revealed the Book to His servant, allowing no crookedness in it (Quran 18:1)

The Prophet ﷺ  not only delivered the message of the Qur'an but lived as an example of mercy, justice, and compassion. Following his path is, in essence, an act of fleeing to Allah because it brings us closer to understanding and embodying divine mercy in our own lives.

JUMU’A KHUTBA

The weekly Jumu'a, or Friday, Congregational prayer is live streamed from Al-Maqasid from 12:15pm-1:10pm.

Pleasing Allah with Good Character and Da’wah - ​​Imam Zaid Shakir 

“Each and every one of us should be a shining light that is lit from the lamp of Muhammad ﷺ.”

In this powerful khutba, Imam Zaid Shakir calls believers to fulfill the duties that Islam expects of us, including perfecting our character by following Allah’s beloved, the most perfect of creation, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and bringing the glad tidings of Islam and Allah’s Mercy to those who do not believe. He asks several probing questions to encourage self-reflection on where each of us stands in this regard.

Imam Zaid also explains why Islam is the epitome of patriotism, and he defines the many facets of the concept of justice. 

RAWHA

The Rawha takes place every Tuesday at 7:00pm EST. During the Rawha, Shaykh Yahya Rhodus will be covering the Hikam (Aphorisms) of Imam Ibn 'Ata'illah al-Iskandari.

Seminary Rawha

Linguistically related to the spirit (ruh), the Rawha is a class centered around Islamic spirituality. It explores the text-based tradition that outlines the spiritual path and aims to inspire seekers to both embark upon it and attain its realities.

The Seminary Rawha takes place Monday and Wednesday evenings
